Background information

Melissa K. Bambino was a young, healthy, urban professional and graduate of The University of Notre Dame. As a Teen Vogue staffer, Melissa was living the New York City dream. In 2003, Melissa was diagnosed with melanoma and died shortly after at the young age of 29. More than 8,000 melanoma deaths are recorded every year and it is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in young adults 15-29.

waterbottles_3winnerToday, her sister and best friend are doing what they can to stop tragedies like this from happening to others by establishing The Melissa K. Bambino Melanoma Foundation. Proceeds will benefit The Skin Cancer Foundation for a melanoma research grant. To promote public education and awareness about sun safety, and to raise money for melanoma research, they created The Melissa Fund Sun Run, an officially USATF-certified 5k Run/Walk open to men and women of all ages.
