An eclectic group of New Yorkers came out to support The Skin Cancer Foundation’s first annual A Night the Stars Shine On event at the Central Park Boathouse on Tuesday June 29. Guests included violinists Joshua Bell and Philipee Quint; Olympic fencer Tim Morehouse; model Jonathan Niziol; America’s Top Model Judge Nolé Marin, Photographer and cast member of Bravo’s new show “Double Exposure” Indrani Pal-Chaudhuri; Markus Klinko and GK Reid, also of “Double Exposure;” TV personalities Lindsay McCormick and Lynne White and NY Socialite Karen Koeingsberg. |
Event co-chairs, Mindy Gorman and Elizabeth Robins, Esq., joined forces to introduce The Skin Cancer Foundation to the New York social scene and to raise awareness and funds for this important cause. Mindy Gorman, founder of Live, Love, Laugh, now a part of The Skin Cancer Foundation, lost her beloved husband to melanoma. Elizabeth Robins, daughter of Dr. Perry Robins, President and Founder of The Skin Cancer Foundation, grew up watching her father, a renowned Mohs surgeon, educate people about the world’s most common form of cancer. Together, they want to make a difference. They created a magnificent event and rallied a group dedicated group of volunteers all whom helped make the event a tremendous success. The event committee included: Diane Ackley; Anne Akers; Erika Balfour, MD; Maribeth Chitkara, MD; Leena Gurevich; Cheryl Karcher, MD; Ellen Leikind; Séverine Manuel; Sharon Marantz Walsh; Scott Neher; Tony Ocasio Esq.; Sue Phillips; Dr. Marcia Robbins-Wilf; César Sanchez; Deborah S. Sarnoff, MD; and Ian Shapolsky.
Held in a marvelous venue, it was a delightful evening filled with good friends, poker, martinis, and fabulous auction prizes. DJ David Manuel and GQ Twain’s fashion photographer, Chiun-Kai Shih generously volunteered their services.
Since its founding in 1979, The Skin Cancer Foundation has set the standard for educating the public and the medical profession about skin cancer, its prevention by means of sun protection, the need for early detection, and prompt, effective treatment. It is the only international organization devoted solely to combating the world’s most common cancer, now occurring at epidemic levels.

The Skin Cancer Foundation’s First Ever Sun Safety Expo Was a Great Success |

More than 5,000 people visited the first ever Sun Safety Expo, held at Grand Central Terminal last week. The Skin Cancer Foundation and a collection of its Seal of Recommendation holders teamed up to spread skin cancer and sun protection awareness in time for the start of summer. Attendees received free product samples and coupons from 17 exhibitors, along with sun safety information from the Foundation.
Attendees also had the opportunity to have a professional skin care evaluation from Juva Skin & Laser Center and Canfield Imaging Systems.
“The feedback from the event was extremely positive,” said Perry Robins, MD, President of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “People were very eager to learn about how they can protect themselves from the sun.”
Since its founding in 1979, The Skin Cancer Foundation has set the standard for educating the public and the medical profession about skin cancer and its prevention by means of sun protection. Over those 30-plus years, hundreds of sun protection products have qualified for and carried the Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation, a symbol of effective sun protection that is recognized by consumers around the globe.
The Seal Holders who participated in this year’s sun safety expo included 3M Window Films, Banana Boat, Bare Escentuals, Cetaphil, Coppertone Lenses/Vision Ease Lenses, DDF, Eucerin, Garnier Nutritioniste, Hawaiian Tropic, Iredale Mineral Cosmetics, L’Oréal Paris, La Roche-Posay, NO-AD/Ocean Potion, Olay, Physicians Formula, Solar Guard/Panorama Window Films and Solutia Performance Films.

The Skin Cancer Foundation’s 30th Anniversary Celebration at Castignola’s Restaurant during the American Academy of Dermatology meeting in San Francisco was a very special for evening for the Foundation and its guests.
It began with the Foundation’s annual Research Grants Awards Ceremony hosted by Chairman of the Research Grants Committee, Jean-Claude Bystryn. After the awards, the research grant recipients and friends of the Foundation stayed to mingle and catch up with one another after a day at the AAD meeting. After cocktails, guests moved upstairs to a private dining room overlooking the water for the Amonette Circle Induction Ceremony and a Roast & Toast of the Foundation’s Founder and President, Perry Robins, MD.

 The Amonette Circle was formed in 2004 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Foundation and is comprised of physicians who make a lifetime commitment of $25,000 to The Skin Cancer Foundation. Membership in the Circle signifies a dedication to fighting skin cancer and demonstrates outstanding leadership in the field of dermatology. In celebration of the Foundation's 30th year, eight new members were inducted into the Circle, bringing membership to 53 members.

Thirty years ago, very little was known about skin cancer and the importance of sun protection. A visionary young doctor saw the need for an organization devoted to skin cancer awareness. Under the leadership of Perry Robins, MD, The Skin Cancer Foundation has become the foremost organization devoted to educating the public and the medical profession about skin cancer, its prevention by means of sun protection, the need for early detection, and prompt, effective treatment. In honor of the Foundation's 30th Anniversary, a few of Dr. Robins' closest friends and colleagues gathered together for a unique opportunity to "roast and toast" him.

This year’s event honored David Suliteanu, president and chief executive officer of Sephora USA was honored alongside beauty expert, Lois Joy Johnson, the former beauty and fashion director of More magazine. Dr. Jonathan Levine, co-founder of GoSmile presented the award to Suliteanu, while Dr. Daniel C. Baker, top plastic surgeon and gala benefit chair, introduced Johnson.
