Rise and Shine! April 7: A 4:15 AM call in St. Petersburg |
|
Rise and Shine! Tuesday, April 7, started with a 4:15 AM call time at Channel 10 in St. Petersburg. You sure this is the “morning” show?
Dr. Poitras met us at the station and spoke to the reporter about the tour and the importance of skin cancer screenings.
Patience is a virtue! In St. Petersburg, patients waited up to four hours for their chance to be seen by the dermatologist. By the end of the day, we found 10 suspected cases of melanoma and screened 90 people in six hours. What a rewarding and gratifying stop.
After St. Pete’s, we headed east to Orlando. On Friday morning, our first stop was the morning show on Fox TV. Dr. Palceski joined us and was interviewed for the show.
After a little breakfast, we headed to the Ron Jon Surf Shop at the Festival Bay Mall in Orlando, where we parked between Ron Jon’s and the Bass Pro Shop. Throughout the day, all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts stopped by.
Every doctor is unique and some are very creative! Since it’s difficult for people to see things on their back, Dr. Steele had a clever way of showing people areas of concern: He took pictures of suspicious moles, which we then printed and gave to the patients as they were leaving. People felt that this was very helpful and we’ll keep this idea in mind for future exams. Thanks, Dr. Steele.

April 6 - Jupiter Medical Center, well known for cancer screenings |
|
On April 6 we pulled into Jupiter Medical Center, well known for the numerous cancer screenings it hosts throughout the year.
Our arrival was greeted with lots of eager patients and we quickly had a line outside the RV. Fortunately, we had lots of help from some great volunteers.
Dr. Trost and Dr. Vitulli are no strangers to these events. To prevent long wait times, Dr. Vitulli set up another screening area in the Medical Center and Dr. Trost used both rooms in our mobile unit. By doubling up on rooms, we were able to screen 88 people. Volunteers transferred patients back and forth in the snazzy golf cart.
A reporter from West Palm CW came by to shoot info for the news and spent time speaking with a few of the volunteers.
What a way to end a great day! A beautiful sunset on the way to St. Petersburg.

April 4 - a great day at the beach in Dania, Florida |
|
April 4: Saturday was a great “day at the beach” at the John Lloyd Beach State Park in Dania, FL. Today was a busy day and we screened over 60 people. Many came to the park specifically to see us.
Cruise ships were docked nearby and passengers were enjoying a day in the sun. Before long, word spread about the screenings and several passengers stopped by. Many were Canadian and only spoke French, but somehow we communicated very well!
During the tour, doctors have commented on how much they like Columbia’s Omni Shade clothing and they often recommend it to patients. Dr. Schillinger, a big supporter, wore an entire Omni Shade outfit today. |

We kicked things off in Miami's famous South Beach |
April 2 and 3: We kicked things off with a great location in Miami’s famous South Beach area: right in the heart of the shopping district and just blocks from the beach. The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Spanish language brochures were a big hit today. A blind man came to the screening today. He doesn’t leave his house very often, but his family brought him to the event as he needed to see a doctor. We were glad we were able to help him. It made us realize just how important it is to conduct self-exams, and how fortunate we are that we can do this. |

Meet the Tour Team, Christie and Susan! We met at The Skin Cancer Foundation in NYC for our first official day of the tour. Little did we know what the tour had in store for us!
Presenting the 2009 Road To Healthy Skin Tour RV. The RV’s polished and ready to roll to Miami Beach for our first event. |
