A Word From the President 26 2 PDF Print E-mail
Although skin cancer is the most common malignancy in the United States, it is one of the most preventable, since 90 percent of skin cancers are associated with sun exposure. And when detected early, it is also one of the most treatable. Yet more than 10,000 people in the US die from skin cancer every year.

The Road to Healthy Skin Tour helps to give us a fighting chance to reduce these deaths as well as the significant disfigurement caused by advanced skin cancers. We expect to screen more than 10,000 people across the country, making 2009 the tour’s biggest year yet. At each of our 80-plus stops, dermatologists will perform full-body skin exams in one of two private rooms in our 38-foot customized RV. The tour will also offer educational materials on skin cancer prevention and detection, as well as sunscreen samples, coupons, and other information.

As of this writing, the 2009 tour has already held 47 screenings. Volunteer dermatologists have performed more than 2,000 quick, easy, and potentially lifesaving full-body skin exams, discovering 399 suspected actinic keratoses (the most common precancer); 209 suspected basal cell carcinomas; 74 suspected squamous cell carcinomas; and 45 suspected melanomas, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Additional sponsorship support for the tour is provided by DUSA Pharmaceuticals, Inc.®, Columbia Sportswear, Solar Gard® Window Film, and Fitness magazine. To see the tour schedule and receive our exclusive tour newsletter, visit us at www. skincancer.org/Tour.

We would also like to announce The Sunsational Guide to Smart Sun Safety: Fun in the Sun 101, our lively new interactive website for students in grades 6-8. This eye-catching and informative site, made possible by an educational grant from Eucerin, offers countless important facts about sun protection, skin cancer prevention, the safe way to take vitamin D, and the hazards of tanning, all done with a light touch that will appeal to children. Students can also watch educational 3-D videos, learn their own skin types, and enjoy many other entertaining, involving activities. Teachers can download a sun safety curriculum, poster, quiz, and Healthy Skin Dos and Don’ts for children’s use online and in the classroom, as well as order our free teacher kit. We hope you’ll enjoy and appreciate the site as much as we do! Visit us at www.skincancer.org/school.
