Leukoplakia

Leukoplakia is a skin condition that manifests itself as white patches or plaques on the tounge or inside the mouth and has the potential to develop into squamous cell carcinoma.  It is caused by sources of chronic irritation, including smoking or other tobacco use, and by rough edges on teeth, dentures or fillings.  Leukoplakia on the lips is known as actinic cheleitis and is usually related to sun damage.
