We’ve had a busy, productive twelve months at The Skin Cancer Foundation, and we look forward to much more of the same as we continue to spread the word about cancer prevention, detection and treatment. I’d like to share with you just a bit of what we’re looking forward to as well as what we’ve accomplished.
The Road to Healthy Skin
For starters, this May, in celebration of National Skin Cancer Awareness month, we are thrilled to be launching The Road to Healthy Skin Tour, presented by AVEENO® and Rite Aid.
This is The Skin Cancer Foundation’s third consecutive national skin cancer screening tour. Since 2006, our volunteer board-certified dermatologists have performed over 9,000 screenings in 78 cities, discovering thousands of precancers and hundreds of cancers. Because early detection and treatment of skin cancer is crucial, we hope you’ll join us for a free skin exam when we’re in your neck of the woods. For more information, see The Skin Cancer Foundation's Road to Healthly Skin Tour section of our website.
12th World Congress on Cancers of the Skin
We’re also pleased to announce that The Skin Cancer Foundation is co-sponsoring The 12th World Congress on Cancers of the Skin, to be held in Tel Aviv, Israel, May 3-6, 2009. Approximately 1,000 dermatologists, scientists, plastic surgeons and oncologists from all over the world are expected to attend. We’re very excited about the conference, which will cover subjects such as:
- Epidemiology of skin cancer
- Primary and secondary prevention of skin cancer
- Actinic keratosis
- Sunscreen and skin cancer
- Biology and treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer
- Skin cancer in organ-transplant patients
- Viruses and skin cancer
- Melanoma
- Cutaneous lymphomas
- Mohs micrographic surgery
- Spindle cell tumors of the skin
We welcome attendance from interested clinicians and researchers everywhere. For more information, visit our 12th World Congress on Cancers of the Skin web page.
2007 Gala
Finally, it is important to note that our annual Skin Sense Gala plays a major role in making possible the Foundation’s countless projects throughout the year. Fortunately, our 2007 Gala, held on October 10, was a great success. More than 500 guests were on hand to honor Colleen Goggins, Worldwide Chairman, Consumer and Personal Health Group of Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies, Inc., and Valerie Monroe, Beauty Director of O, The Oprah Magazine. The Gala Benefit Committee was chaired by Neil Sadick, MD.
The event was hosted by Meredith Vieira of The Today Show and featured celebrity guests like The Sopranos’ Tony Sirico. Singer/actress Emmy Rossum (The Phantom of the Opera) dazzled us with several musical numbers, and we raised just under $1 million to benefit the Foundation’s public awareness and research programs. 2007 was a very rewarding year, and the coming years should be equally packed with opportunities for skin cancer education and advocacy.
