Raising Funds and Awareness

Over the past 12 years, 49-year-old Minnesotan Karen Schwartz has had more than 1,000 actinic keratoses and several basal and squamous carcinomas removed. After being so personally affected by skin cancer, Karen knew that she wanted to fundraise to support the mission of The Skin Cancer Foundation and educate the public about the dangers of skin cancer.

Rather than asking directly for donations, Karen came up with a clever fundraising idea – an upscale silent auction for women. Karen asked friends and family to bring 5 items from their closet or home that they didn't use anymore, but knew that someone else would love. Her idea has been very successful.

Now in its sixth year, Karen's "Trash and Treasure" auction has grown larger each year with more than 40 women now contributing items. Keep up the great work, Karen! Your continued support is strongly appreciated.
