Sample Public Policy

Print E-mail

Make skin cancer awareness a priority in your community. Propose this policy to your elected representatives, or attend meetings open to the public and, if procedures allow, make the proposal yourself or with an organized group of citizens.

Sample policy:

Each local governing body should adopt a skin cancer prevention policy, the implementation of which will be carried out by its various agencies.  The following draft policy can be used as is or modified to suit local needs.

The incidence of skin cancer is increasing in epidemic proportions worldwide.  In the United States there are currently more than 600,000 new cases of skin cancer diagnosed each year, and that figure is rising steadily.  Skin cancer is responsible for 8500 deaths annually.  It accounts for many millions of dollars in health care costs and loss of worker productivity.  This governing body will, therefore, consider the implications for skin cancer prevention in the development of future policies and plans and will incorporate appropriate short- and long-term strategies.
