It is the fifth year of The Skin Cancer Foundation's Road to Healthy Skin Tour and on Wednesday, April 11, in Duluth, GA, we must have set a new record for the most number of people to attend a screening! When the RV arrived shortly after 9:00 AM there were already 117 people waiting! We weren’t the only people who were surprised by the huge turnout: "Wow, I can't believe there are so many people here!” Kendra Cole, MD, said.
Unfortunately with our doctors only available for a total of five hours, we knew that screening everyone would be impossible. We quickly came up with a plan and explained to some people that we were sorry, but we would be unable to screen them. We made sure that they didn’t leave empty-handed, though: they all left with samples of Aveeno Sunscreen, a Fitness magazine, and information on how to perform self-exams and how to find other screenings in the area.
Dr. Cole and Russell Harris, MD, gave 62 exams, and we actually had six hours of screening time, thanks to their generosity! Drs. Cole and Harris detected three suspected melanomas, as well s 27 suspected skin precancers, 17 suspected basal cell carcinomas, and six suspected squamous cell carcinomas.
