Destination Healthy Skin

Driving Detection to Save Lives

Destination Healthy Skin is The Skin Cancer Foundation’s mobile skin cancer screening and education program. Since its launch, the program’s team of volunteer dermatologists has:

  • Provided more than 27,000 free skin cancer screenings
  • Identified more than 11,000 potential skin cancers and precancers, including 485 suspected melanomas.
  • Distributed free skin cancer educational materials and sun protection products to nearly 100,000 people.

Our 38-foot Destination Healthy Skin RV is equipped with two private exam rooms where volunteer dermatologists perform screenings. In our waiting area, program managers answer questions and distribute skin cancer early detection and prevention information.

A Successful 2022 Journey in the Books!

It was a busy year for Destination Healthy Skin. Over five months, our RV traveled more than 10,000 miles. Along the way we held 40 events, where 50 volunteer dermatologists provided 1,414 free skin cancer screenings and educated thousands of people.

The doctors identified 513 potential skin cancers and precancers, including 33 suspected melanomas. The dermatologists also found 183 atypical moles, a risk factor for melanoma. Those participants with atypical moles were cautioned to keep a close eye on their skin.

What to expect during your skin exam

Skin cancer screenings take place in our Destination Healthy Skin RV, which is equipped with two private exam rooms. You’ll be given a brief form to fill out while you wait for your turn. Then you’ll be shown into an exam room and provided with a gown to change into. When you’re ready, the dermatologist will come into the room and examine your skin from head-to-toe. The doctor will note the findings on your form and make recommendations for next steps.

Please note that screenings are provided on a first-come, first served basis and subject to dermatologist availability. The exam itself takes approximately ten minutes.
