Road to Healthy Skin Tour Wraps Up Fourth Year of Free Skin Cancer Screenings

More than 13,000 people screened since Tour began in 2008

– The Skin Cancer Foundation’s fourth annual Road to Healthy Skin Tour, presented by AVEENO® and Rite Aid, has wrapped-up after 27 weeks on the road. The Tour travels the country, offering free full-body skin cancer screenings and providing the latest skin cancer information to the public.

The Tour fulfills a need in many communities – people regularly begin lining up before the RV arrives and Tour staff members report that participants often tell of traveling for hours or missing work to take advantage of the screenings.

By the Numbers

More than 13,000 people have received free skin cancer screenings in the 4 years the Tour has been on the road. In 2011, with the help of 139 volunteer dermatologists, approximately 3,097 people were screened for skin cancer. More than 1,500 suspected precancers and cancers were detected, including 40 suspected melanomas, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

This year the Tour made 81 stops across the country. Equipped with 2 private exam rooms, the 38-foot customized RV traveled 18,566 miles, making stops in 25 states.

A Tour Testimonial

Stephen Lucas, 69, received a free skin cancer screening through the Tour, and called the Foundation to say thank you. Said Lucas, “I was treated for skin cancer years ago, so when I saw the RV that day I thought it would be a good idea to get checked again. The doctor noticed a spot on my right arm and said she thought it might be a melanoma. When I went back to my regular dermatologist, I insisted he take it out.”

The volunteer dermatologist’s suspicions were confirmed; it was a melanoma. “As far as I’m concerned, The Road to Healthy Skin Tour saved my life,” said Lucas.

“Stories like Mr. Lucas’ remind us why the Tour is such an important public service, and how vital early detection is when treating skin cancer,” said Perry Robins, MD, President of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “The survival rate for patients whose melanoma is detected early, before the tumor has penetrated the skin, is about 99 percent, whereas the survival rate falls to 15 percent for those with advanced disease.”
