As a nurse, she trusted her instincts even after being reassured not to worry. That persistence led to a biopsy and, ultimately, a Stage Ib melanoma diagnosis. After her diagnosis, Whitney traveled to Birmingham, Alabama, a two-hour drive from her hometown of Troy, where she underwent a [wide local excision](https://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-information/melanoma/melanoma-treatments/) and a [sentinel lymph node biopsy](https://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-information/melanoma/the-stages-of-melanoma/slnb/). Her surgery successfully removed her entire melanoma and the lymph node biopsy found that her cancer did not spread. Looking back, Whitney is grateful for trusting her gut. She knows that if she not been persistent in advocating for herself, her story may have ended quite differently. ### Fear of Recurrence Whitney acknowledged that while the physical recovery was important, the [emotional journey](https://www.skincancer.org/treatment-resources/support-resources/) has been just as significant. Even though time has passed since her diagnosis and her scar is fading, her fear and anxiety has not. “The fear of reccurrence is very loud all the time. And I’m almost terrified of the sun. I know a lot of people go through that,” explains Whitney. ### Sharing Her Story ![]() After surgery Whitney says that her melanoma journey has completely changed the way she approaches [time outdoors](https://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-prevention/sun-protection/). It has also inspired her to share her story online. Her goal is not to scare people, but to encourage them to protect their skin and pay attention to changes that may seem small. “That’s why I make the reels that I do and will tell you to wear [sunscreen](https://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-prevention/sun-protection/sunscreen/) until I’m blue in the face,” Whitney says. When people try to downplay her [melanoma](https://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-information/melanoma/) by telling her she was “almost 40” when she was diagnosed and they will just “cut it out”, Whitney reminds them that melanoma is serious and your repeated actions for years can lead to such a diagnosis. “Everybody always says ‘well, you didn’t get skin cancer until you were almost 40.’ And my response is always, ‘Yeah, I used [tanning](https://www.skincancer.org/risk-factors/tanning/) beds and laid out in the sun for over 20 years! The sun damage is cumulative.'” ### Skin Checks Save Lives ![]() Whitney advocating in Washington, DC Today, Whitney hopes her experience encourages others to schedule regular [skin checks](https://www.skincancer.org/early-detection/self-exams/), protect their skin with [sunscreen](https://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-prevention/sun-protection/sunscreen/) and hats, and trust themselves if something doesn’t feel right. She knows firsthand that melanoma doesn’t always look the way people expect and [early detection](https://www.skincancer.org/early-detection/) can make the difference between life and death.
