The Road to Healthy Skin Tour celebrates its fifth year providing free skin cancer screenings across the country. Nearly 20 new cities added to 2012 Tour schedule.
March 5, 2012 (New York, NY) – The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Road to Healthy Skin Tour, presented by AVEENO® and Rite Aid, returns to the road this March. The Tour, which started in 2008, travels across the country for six consecutive months utilizing local volunteer dermatologists who provide free full-body skin cancer screenings in the Tour’s 38-ft RV.
For the fifth year in a row, the RV will hit the road, making an estimated 85 stops in 27 states. Approximately 55 of the stops will be at Rite Aid stores. The Tour will begin on March 19 in Raleigh, N.C., and end September 22 in Houston, Texas. In an effort to reach new communities, the Tour has planned new stops in upstate New York, Georgia, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Virginia. “The Tour was created to help detect skin cancers early so they can be easily and effectively treated,” said Perry Robins, MD, President, The Skin Cancer Foundation. “We also hope to raise awareness and educate the public about the importance of sun protection, while encouraging people to see their dermatologist once a year, as well as perform self-exams once a month.”

How It Works
At each stop, people can visit the Tour’s 38-foot customized RV to receive a quick, easy and potentially life-saving full-body skin cancer screening. Local dermatologists who have donated their time and services to the Foundation conduct the screenings. The patient is given a brief form to fill out and then shown to one of the RV’s two private exam rooms. The dermatologist returns and examines the patient’s skin from head to toe. The doctor will then note the findings on the form and make recommendations for next steps, including a biopsy if necessary.
The exam takes approximately ten minutes, and participants are advised to arrive to the screenings early, as the screenings are provided on a first-come, first served basis. Educational materials that explain how to perform monthly skin checks at home and the proper ways to protect the skin from the sun on a daily basis are provided to Tour participants, along with sunscreen samples and giveaways.
The Tour fulfills a need in many communities – people regularly begin lining up before the RV arrives and Tour staff members report that participants often tell of traveling for hours or missing work to take advantage of the screenings. To date, more than 13,000 people have received free screenings. Approximately 5,269 suspected cancers and precancers (such as actinic keratoses) have been detected, including 239 suspected melanomas, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
