The Skin Cancer Foundation Launches Eighth Annual Road to Healthy Skin Tour

Presented by Rite Aid, Tour Will Raise Awareness
and Offer
Free Skin Cancer Screenings

June 29, 2015 (New York, NY) – The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Road to Healthy Skin Tour, presented by Rite Aid,  kicks off today, bringing free full body skin cancer screenings to communities throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Now in its eighth year, the Road to Healthy Skin Tour works with local volunteer dermatologists who provide quick, easy and potentially life-saving full body skin cancer screenings. This year’s Tour begins today and will run through the end of August, making approximately 35 stops at Mid-Atlantic Rite Aid locations. In addition to providing screenings, the Tour raises skin cancer awareness and educates the public about the importance of prevention and early detection.

“We’re pleased to bring back this life-saving screening tour for the eighth consecutive year,” said Skin Cancer Foundation President Perry Robins, MD. “Thanks to Rite Aid’s support the Tour continues to play a critical role in early detection and helps The Skin Cancer Foundation educate communities about the world’s most common cancer.”

Since the Tour’s inception in 2008 more than 20,000 people have received free skin cancer screenings. To date, more than 8,500 suspected cancers and precancers have been detected, including more than 350 suspected melanomas.

“Rite Aid is proud to once again be the presenting sponsor of The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Road to Healthy Skin Tour,” said Robert Thompson, Rite Aid executive vice president of pharmacy. “These screenings have demonstrated the importance of early detection as it has undoubtedly saved lives and is a testament to the power of proactive education.”

In addition to emphasizing the importance of early detection, The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends adopting a complete sun protection regimen that includes seeking shade, covering up with clothing (including wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses) in addition to daily sunscreen use.

How the Full Body Skin Cancer Screenings Work:

The full body skin cancer screenings take place in the Tour’s customized 38-foot RV, equipped with two private exam rooms. Exams take approximately ten minutes and participants are advised to arrive early, as screenings are provided on a first-come, first served basis. Before getting an exam, each participant is given a brief form to fill out and then shown to an exam room. After the participant changes into a gown, the dermatologist examines the patient’s skin from head-to-toe. The doctor will note the findings on the form and make recommendations for next steps, including getting a biopsy if necessary. Tour participants will receive educational materials that explain how to perform monthly self-exams at home as well as sun protection tips and information on Receutics Active Skin Repair, a new line of over-the-counter, dermatologically tested skincare products developed exclusively for Rite Aid.

The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Road to Healthy Skin Tour, presented by Rite Aid, receives additional support from Novartis Pharmaceuticals.
