March Newsletter

Vol. 3 | March 2026

If you’ve been treated for skin cancer, or know someone who has, you may already be familiar with Mohs surgery for basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) and certain melanomas.

Also known as Mohs micrographic surgery, the procedure is considered the most effective for removing nonmelanoma skin cancers, with cure rates up to 99 percent. The procedure is done in stages, including lab work, while the patient waits. This allows the removal of all cancerous cells for the highest cure rate while sparing healthy tissue and leaving the smallest possible scar.

We’ll be sharing more about Mohs on our social channels throughout the month. In the meantime, here are more details and answers to common questions.

Taking Back the UV Index

Amid rising misinformation about UV exposure and mixed public understanding of how the UV Index works, The Skin Cancer Foundation and AccuWeather are partnering to improve public understanding of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, the leading cause of skin cancer. Together, we aim to “take back the UV index” and ensure that people have access to clear, consistent, science-driven information daily. As part of this initiative, the Foundation will feature the AccuWeather Daily Max UV Index on relevant pages of our website. Learn more.

The bottom line is that everyone needs sun protection during daylight hours all year long, regardless of their skin type or the UV forecast for the day. If you can see, then there’s UV!

Update: FDA Tanning Bed Rule Withdrawn

The Skin Cancer Foundation is greatly disappointed that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has withdrawn the 2015 proposed rule “General and Plastic Surgery Devices: Restricted Sale, Distribution, and Use of Sunlamp Products.” This proposed rule recommended tanning bed restrictions for minors. It is our hope that the FDA reviews the scientific evidence and reconsiders this decision. In the meantime, The Skin Cancer Foundation will continue to educate the public about the dangers of UV tanning beds. Read more.
