Spotlight on Supporters: Fundraising Events by Friends of the Foundation

Another Skin Cancer Awareness Month may have come and gone, but a month later we’re still thinking about some of the great fundraising events held to support The Skin Cancer Foundation! While we’re focused year-round on the world’s most common cancer, May is a popular time for friends of the Foundation to take initiative and run their own fundraising events. We love their efforts to support our mission, and we wanted to share some with you.

From charity 5ks to cosmetic parties, in May 2018, our supporters got super creative to raise funds for our community programs and education campaigns. Check out the slide show to see a few of the highlights.

Strides Against Skin Cancer
On May 20th, supporters took to the streets of Kent Island, Maryland, to run/walk a 5k or 10k race benefiting The Skin Cancer Foundation. SCF Member Allan C. Harrington, MD, and his team at Anne Arundel Dermatology coordinated the event, and got many local organizations on board as sponsors for year three of the race.
13th Annual Spring Cosmetic Event
Hosted by Wendy McFalda, MD, and Clarkston Dermatology in Clarkston, Michigan, the 13th Annual Spring Cosmetic event was filled with exciting raffles, hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and exclusive night-only discounts on skin care products. Guests learned about the latest developments in cosmetic treatments and clinical skin care while mingling at the Oakhurst Golf & Country Club, and all proceeds went to The Skin Cancer Foundation.
Veronica Beard
This New York-based women’s fashion brand has a charitable initiative called VB Gives Back. Each month, the founders select a woman and a nonprofit of her choice to support. This May, VB Gives Back featured New York City dermatologist Elizabeth K. Hale, MD, a senior vice president of The Skin Cancer Foundation. Dr. Hale chose the Foundation, and Veronica Beard donated $10 for every online order that month. The initiative was hugely successful and raised $20,000 for the Foundation.
Spin for Healthy Skin
On a Saturday afternoon in New York’s Flatiron neighborhood, healthy skin advocates sweated it out in spin class for a good cause. The Skin Cancer Foundation’s first Spin for Healthy Skin event geared up on May 12th, just two days before the launch of Destination: Healthy Skin, our mobile skin cancer education and screening program.
Take Your Skin to a Better Place
Also on May 12, participants in the Take Your Skin to a Better Place 5k in Fort Myers, Florida, kept with the theme of getting a little sweaty for skin cancer awareness. Whether supporters walked or ran the race, they were all there to support our mission — reducing the incidence of skin cancer through education.
Vineyard Vines
On May 29th, shoppers at any of Vineyard Vines retail stores in Florida received a 10 percent discount, and the brand donated 10 percent of the day’s sales to The Skin Cancer Foundation. Shoppers were even encouraged to ask staff for help selecting sun protection clothing!
