Skin Cancer Is Serious

By Victoria Kopec • May 13, 2024

“I never knew how serious it could be. It wasn’t until I found out that the melanoma had spread to my lymph nodes that I realized it is a serious, serious disease that can kill you.”

– Chelsea, melanoma warrior

If you think skin cancer is “no big deal,” think again. Each year in America, over 5 million people are diagnosed with skin cancer  — more than all other cancers combined. Countless people suffer lasting physical and emotional damage from the disease, and thousands lose their battle every year.

The unfortunate truth is that many people don’t realize how serious skin cancer can be until it happens to them. That’s why we’re working to educate people about the dangers of skin cancer, and we have a team of skin cancer warriors who are sharing their #SkinCancerIsSerious stories

It’s a Big Deal

While some skin cancers, like melanoma, are more deadly than others, there is no “good type” of skin cancer. If left untreated, basal cell carcinoma can become locally invasive, grow wide and deep into the skin and destroy skin, tissue and bone. Untreated squamous cell carcinomas can grow deep into the skin and spread to other parts of the body. The longer treatment is delayed, the more disfiguring and deadly skin cancer can become. But skin cancer is also preventable, and if detected early enough, highly treatable. The key is to get more people to understand skin cancer, know the early warning signs and how to protect themselves.

Our goal is to get the message out that skin cancer IS a big deal. Skin cancer is serious.
